Get to Know an Acquisitions Editor: Maria Convey

Do you have prior publishing experience?
I studied Publishing and English at Loughborough University which provided me with really solid knowledge and practical experience of the publishing industry. While studying I did some work experience at Pearson and also setup a local university press alongside academic staff and peers.
My first job as a graduate was as an Editorial Assistant at McGraw-Hill where I was able to put into practice all of the skills and knowledge I had obtained from my degree and learn a great deal from the two commissioning editors I supported.
What’s your history with Elsevier?
I joined Elsevier in June 2015 as an Editorial Project Manager working predominantly on Energy titles. I really enjoyed this role as it enabled me to begin building my network of contacts in the Energy field whilst supporting authors throughout the development of their projects to publication. I became an Acquisitions Editor in the Energy team in October 2016 and am responsible for signing titles into the Nuclear, Thermal and Power Plant Engineering programs.
What do you enjoy about signing in this area?
I am still a very new Acquisitions Editor and I am learning a great deal every day about the area that is so interesting and applicable to everyday life. Energy is so fast moving, and the continuous developments in research and advances in technologies ensures that there is always something new to learn about and a continuous need to seek up-to-date, cutting edge, valuable content. It is very rewarding knowing that the authors I work with are at the top of their game carrying out such valuable research, and that the impact of their work affects such a dynamic and wide reaching global audience.
Why should this person sign a book with you?
Having spent time working as a project manager supporting authors and editors throughout the development of their manuscripts to publication, my desire to build great relationships with my authors and fully support them is still of paramount importance to me. I take great pride in the content I acquire and the authors I collaborate with, ensuring that the end product is a true reflection of their expertise and hard work, and that the intended market will really benefit from having the new content made available to them. I love working with prospective authors to develop their proposals into well rounded, fully thought through projects based on research and reviewer feedback to ensure that authors have complete confidence in the importance and value of their work.
Why do you love publishing?
I really enjoy working in an ever-developing and ever-changing environment, where each day differs from the last. It is also encouraging to know that the books we publish are so well received and well used, that the research behind each book is carried out by top academics and professionals and is of the best quality. It is rewarding to play a small part in the fantastic scientific and technological research that is going on, and the sense of accomplishment when mentioned in an author’s acknowledgements at the front of their book never diminishes.
