Happy World Environment Day!
World Environment Day (WED) is celebrated every year on June 5th in honour of our natural Earth. It was established by the United Nations Environment Programme (UNEP) to increase positive environmental action around the world.
Each year there is a different theme to promote a different environmental concern and challenge, this year’s theme is ‘raise your voice, not the sea levels’. The theme is centred around the growing vulnerability and fear for islands due to climate change and global warming due to the increases in carbon dioxide in the atmosphere. According to UNEP, in the last 100 years sea levels have risen by around 10-25cm (about 10 inches). Saving energy such as turning off lights and appliances reduces the consumption of fossil fuels and therefore decreases carbon dioxide output. WED raises awareness and encourages a collective approach to increase action for the future to protect our world.
Although there is a theme each year, WED helps to raise awareness for all environmental issues. WED is encouraged and supported globally with both celebrities and companies doing campaigns, all voicing environmental concerns and encouraging the public to take action and make a positive impact. This year amongst others, Don Cheadle, Yaya Touré, Gisele Bündchen and Ian Somerhalder are raising their voices and urging the public to face up to the challenge of climate change.
This year WED are hosting a tweetathon over the 5th June, please join us and raise your voice, showing solidarity with millions around the world and tweet about the environmental concerns you have and how you are helping using #WorldEnvironmentDay or #WED2014. More info about the tweetathon can be found here.
Elsevier is a strong supporter of WED and encourages you save energy, whether it is cycling or recycling, we urge you to raise your voice and take action to help generate a positive impact to protect our world.

Earth & Environmental Science
The fields of Earth science, planetary sciences, and environmental science encompass disciplines critical to the future of our world and its inhabitants. Our well-being depends on a thorough understanding of air and water resources, soil chemistry, atmospheric dynamics, geology, and geochemistry, along with a myriad of other aspects of the environment we live in. Elsevier supports the efforts of researchers and scholars in these areas with content that meets their cross-disciplinary needs: journals, books, eBooks, and online tools that span computer science, chemistry, energy, engineering, biology, agronomy, ecology, environmental impact and many other topics fundamental to the study of our world.
