We sit down with, Pramod Thakur,author of Advanced Reservoir and Production Engineering for Coal Bed Methane to discuss his work, research and publication.

  1. What is your particular area of expertise?

I am an equal mix of a Mining Engineer, a Natural Gas engineer and an Applied Mathematician. I have 2 BS, 2 MS and a Ph.D. degrees.

  1. What first inspired you to study your area of expertise?

A mine disaster where about 200 people died inspired me to study this subject. I left my Mom and Dad in 1969 to come to America and study the subject. I was a Captain of the rescue team that got the dead and injured out of the mine. It is worse than war.

  1. Why would readers want to read your book?

Coal provides about 30% of world energy needs and gas provides another 30%. You need to read this book to extract both coal and gas in coal economically.

  1. What subject areas and industries does this book directly relate to?

The vast global coal industry and a smaller coalbed methane industry.

  1. What are the biggest pain points in the industry?

Oversupply of gas at present resulting in rock bottom prices. As the production is curtailed and demand rises, the business will pick up. Coalbed methane is much cheaper than the conventional natural gas.

  1. What problems/challenges does this book address and what problem does it solve for your readers?

The book solves the major problem of a lack of understanding the coalbed reservoir engineering. Millions of dollars have been spent in drilling a deep coal deposit vertically and hydrofracking it with NO gas production. This book reveals which deposits can be best produced and how with a good economy and will prevent waste of money.

  1. What topics and subjects does this book uniquely address and what value does it add to the industry?

The book provides a good knowledge on coal reservoirs—it is very different from conventional reservoirs. It discusses the two main techniques for gas production: hydrofracking of vertical wells and drilling and hydrofracking of horizontal wells.

  1. What do you think will be the next big discovery or development in your field?

The next big discovery would be drilling deep, thick coal seams horizontally and hydrofracking them  to produce a large commercial quantity of cheap gas.

  1. Why did you choose Elsevier to publish this work?

I had prior good experience with Elsevier. I found the people very helpful and understanding. I wrote this book when facing some difficult situation in personal life but got the job done with their help.

About the Author

Pramod Thakur, PhD is Manager of Coal Seam Degasification at CONSOL Energy in Morgantown, West Virginia. The three editors of the publication are board members of the North American Coal Bed Methane Forum (NACBMF), and they represent industry, academia and government. Each has more than 25 years of experience in coal bed methane research, field work, and instruction. The NACBMF has organized conferences to advance mine safety and to increase production of coal bed methane as a worldwide energy resource. For 28 years the Forum has provided an opportunity for an exchange of information on coal bed methane research and technology between the public and private sectors. The NACBMF is governed by a Board of Directors and consists of representatives from the coal bed methane industry, coal and gas industries, gas marketing and service industries. The length and breadth of experience embodied in the NACBMF Board of Directors makes this group exceedingly qualified to produce this book.
